Hi Dolls! The last time I wrote an Income Report post was December of 2014. The plan was to write them monthly but since I am just starting to monetize my blog not much is changing month to month and it’s more beneficial to you guys (and me) to write them quarterly. So here is what I’ve been up to in the first three months of 2015!
Whew! A lot has happened in the past three months. A lot of things have changed, new projects have launched. It’s been a small whirlwind. Ok, I’m being dramatic but there has been a lot.
New Projects and Announcements
Ok, so if you’ve been keeping up with my blog you know I am cohosting a podcast with my friend, Arlin talking about womanhood and pop culture and I am gearing up to launch another solo podcast in the coming weeks. It’s been so fun to research and figure out how to make and produce a podcast but it’s been a lot of work. Outside of the work and time I’ve put in there is a monetary cost to produce the podcast including equipment, and a monthly hosting fee. Plus a fee to rent space. So yes it’s a fun project but it’s money going out of my pocket every month. The plan is to eventually monetize both the podcast I cohost and my solo podcast with sponsorship and advertisements but being that we are literally in the first few episodes that is a little further down the line.
As far as announcements go I am proud to announce that I am officially a Limited Liability Company! Yep, it’s not just Sequins n Pearls it’s Sequins n Pearls, LLC. I’m an official business owner! Woohoo! This is great because I can buy my supplies with my tax id number but it sucks because now I have to be very VERY careful with my purchases and taxes. A headache but so worth it. Another step in the direction of forming my empire!
So if you don’t know, I’ve completely closed my Etsy site. You can check out some of my reasons why here. I decided I can get more bang for my buck by listing items on my own site. In doing so I have been working hard redesigning my jewelry pieces so that they are more professional and sturdy. I want my pieces to say professional and not hobbyist if you get my gist. I’ve spent money sourcing materials, time creating the items and have yet to find the perfect design and combination of materials. So again more money out of my pocket without any monetary gain.
The one good thing I will say is that I have been really improving my jewelry construction and metalsmithing skills which is priceless and not to mention fun. Still I have yet to turn a profit from my jewelry. I am working on it though.
I also, am working to develop a few sewing patterns to sell. In working through some orders for clients and sewing for myself I realized that I enjoy designing and sewing for leisure more than I do for a fee. I’d much rather sew when I don’t have a deadline. So instead of actually providing clothing I am hoping to provide patterns that I’ve developed. Definitely something that I’m excited to continue doing but it is very difficult finding a decently priced pattern-maker and grader. It’s not the easiest process and on top of everything it’s costly! More money going out without any coming in…..yet!

Customer Orders, Merchandise, etc
So as you know in late November I started selling the Big Hair Bigger Dreams tshirts. When I first started selling them I was literally getting each one printed and then sending them myself. Essentially losing money on each order because of the price of printing and shipping. But then I found the wonderful service of Spreadshirt.com which prints and ships all tshirts as well as handles customer service. I am completely removed from the process. All I need to do is design the tshirt and upload my design. So simple, right? And on top of everything I make a profit on every sale. EVERY SALE. Woohoo! Plus the website offers the customers sales without effecting my bottom line. I mean it’s just great.
My friends and family have really been supporting me as well as enticing their friends to purchase my tshirts. It’s so cool to see someone rocking something I’ve designed. Especially people I don’t know. I say this all the time but Big Hair Bigger Dreams is more than just a t-shirt. It’s a movement and I see it growing bigger and bigger as I develop my brand. As for now, in these first three months of the year I’ve made not a great deal of money but some. And honestly BHBD isn’t about making any money but I am grateful for each and every order. I want to use what I make with BHBD to put back into the company and the movement. If you have’t purchased one please check out the BHBD apparel page and also the write up of the brunch I did in honer of my friends with Big Hair and even Bigger Dreams!
Oh! And I have some new BHBD designs coming out so stay tuned!!
On top of the BHBD apparel I am still taking custom orders and have been trying to develop that part of my business but to be honest it’s more difficult than I expected. Not because it’s hard to get business but because sewing custom pieces is not my steez. I’d much rather design which like I said earlier is the direction I’m moving in. But none the less I have made just a few bucks from my orders and I can’t complain about that.

Because I use and access many different websites on different topics I have decided to become an affiliate for as many websites and businesses as I can. One of the ways bloggers make money is by mentioning and linking an item in their posts and then having the reader click the link and possibly purchase something on the referenced website. Making affiliate earnings can be bigggg business. My blog is still so small that I don’t expect this number to increase for a while but if I am already linking to websites like craftsy.com just because of the types of projects I am completing I may as well try to make some coins.
- Affiliate Earnings Total – $0
As you can probably guess by no means am I turning a profit. I am slowly building my business and if I were to add up all my expenses I’d be wayyyy in the red. All in all I have made about $300 since January of 2015. About the $100/month which is at least something. Most companies and blogs make no money within the first few years let alone the first few months so I am incredibly grateful. And like I continue to say I am doing this because of an inner passion to help women and make and design beautiful art so making money isn’t even my biggest concern. I really just want my readers to glean as much as they can from my posts and my experiences.
Again, thank you so much for all your support! See you guys in July! Tell me what you guys are working on! Any new projects?
