Well, after watching Simon Sinek’s TED talk and following that up with his book “Start With Why” in which his TED talk is based on, my entire purpose as a creative and entrepreneur has changed. My world has literally been ROCKED!! I want your world to be rocked too so I’ve created a worksheet to help determine your WHY. Keep reading to download the worksheet!
A little known fact about me – For years I’ve wanted to teach. I mean I tutored kids and adults from elementary to college in math and science for a decade, literally lol! But that wasn’t enough. That didn’t resonate with me. And with dancing being my only passion, (or so I thought) now that that’s over, I’ve been kind of left to my own devices. But after a lot of uncomfortable-ness and reevaluating my life’s purpose, I’ve (re)found my love for all things DIY and am still searching on how to meld that with my want to teach.
As a creative and extremely passionate person going through this process of starting a blog, podcast, small business and the Big Hair Bigger Dreams campaign, I have struggled with trying to figure out how I was going to take my small idea and loads of passion and lift my brand out of obscurity and into the hearts and minds of others.
As I’ve been going through the process of developing my brand I’ve realized how hard it is to convince someone of your purpose. You feel it in your bones but saying it out loud is difficult. Defending your choices is difficult. Defending your art is difficult. Persuading someone to believe in you is difficult.
But it doesn’t have to be.
Now, I ask you, what’s your WHY? Not only what is your why but what is your how and your what? I’ve created a worksheet to help you figure it all out.
If you know your why then all other decisions should come easier. Your path should be clearer your purpose bright as ever. You should have goosebumps just thinking about it! I know I do!!
Simon Sinek, the author of “Start with Why” says,
“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it”
Essentially, to form a loyal following people need to believe in your purpose. They need to identify with your company’s values and see themselves as having the same values. Sinek boasts that starting with why and having a great product will influence the decision making of potential customers. Starting with why breeds brand loyalty and sustainability. Customers don’t mind paying a premium if they believe in your purpose and as a entrepreneur you don’t have to rely on sales or other sales tricks to attract and keep customers. All this of course, is contingent on having a good product but overall your purpose should be your main marketing ploy. Look at Apple! No one knew they needed an iPhone, iPod, or iPad even. Apple markets themselves as innovators, as a company pushing the status quo first and producing products second. Buying an apple product means you are joining a movement and not just purchasing a device that will allow you to talk to your friends at any time, or take pictures or listen to music. It’s much more than that and Simon Sinek goes through all of this in depth in his book. I’m telling you, if you are trying to start a business or movement or blog even YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! It’s such good information and it really helps define whatever it is you are trying to do.
Like I said earlier, I’ve had this deep seeded passion to teach and be creative but I couldn’t really pinpoint what I needed to do. I also started the Big Hair Bigger Dreams movement but didn’t know where I wanted to take it. But after reading this book everything is making sense. Now I have a direction. Now I have not only my WHY but my HOW and WHAT. USe the worksheet below to help you determine your WHY, HOW AND WHAT as well.
What’s your why??
