So, not sure if you’ve ever heard me talk about it but there are a couple people that I look at their career and mentally pretend we have a 1 on 1 mentoring relationship. I like to call these people “mentors in my head” lol! More on this later…
Yesterday, I took a personal day from work to go to the axis show, a trade show for women’s accessories and clothing and it ended up being one of the best days I’ve had in a long time…
Not sure if you’ve noticed, but I haven’t blogged in about two weeks. Two weeks!! Honestly, I’ve been feeling unsettled and just lost. There are so many things going on outside of my blog and creative life that it has been so hard to focus….on anything really. Plus, I’ve really been struggling on whether to continue working corporate or to go after my passion of creating and inspiring. And honestly, after yesterday my decision has been made that much easier. Eek!
When I first started my blog in October, I wrote a post about Melody Ehsani, a jewelery designer who has worked with stars such as: Erykah Badu, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and tons of others. In addition, she has a line of shoes and clothing, a store/showroom in L.A., and is currently working with Reebok on a line of sneakers. In my post I highlighted her thoughts on the the importance of craftsmanship and included and interview she did that completely changed my view of creating. I’ve been in love with her ever since.
Well, yesterday….I had the chance to meet her!
Pause for girly squeal!!!!!
When I say she is my idol I mean she is my Beyonce. I look up to her more than I’ve looked up to anyone in the industry and I can’t describe to you the feeling of meeting her yesterday. She was so sweet and kind and I’ve completely been re-inspired.
After feeling lost for these past two weeks, spending yesterday at the trade show was exactly what I needed. I needed to be re-inspired. I needed to be around women who create and believe in themselves and their art. I needed to be around people who have struggled to go after what they believed in. It was definitely an eye opener.
While there I also talked to Tanaya Henry who also has a jewelery line. She started making jewelery while modeling in NYC. Her first piece was worn by Alicia Keys on a magazine cover and the rest is history. Just like that she’s following her passion and is creating a life from it. I asked her 46888654 questions and she was gracious and patient enough to answer them lol. Check out her jewelery at Lace by Tanaya. She has awesome pieces! I bought the wrist cuffs and the ankle cuffs and I can not wait to rock them. You can also see some of her designs on IG @tanayahenry. Check her out. Trust me, she’s dope!
My advice to others going through an uninspired phase is to do whatever is necessary to be re-inspired. Be around those people that inspire you. Put yourself in a situation where creativity is celebrated and abundant. A little secret…. I essentially had to sneak in the show because after doing research and finding out that Melody is part of the Axis Show Collective there was no way I was not going to meet her. I was determined but I had no credentials and I was not a vendor. I had to literally beg (and lie) for them to let me in as a guest!
With that being said, what have you done when you were uninspired? Have you done anything crazy because you were determined to jump start your creativity?
