Since starting my blog and writing this post about my blog milestones, I receive a lot of questions from new bloggers wondering how I’ve gained and increased traffic on my blog…especially since it’s only been a few months since I started it.
Last week I asked you guys to comment and leave your websites/blogs and any tips and tricks you have for new bloggers on this post. The idea was that I would give some tips that I’ve learned as a new blogger AND highlight other bloggers (and hopefully send traffic and followers their way) by featuring anyone who left a comment on the post.
I had three readers leave comments and you have NO IDEA how much I enjoyed looking through their websites. It surprised me how much I loved reading their sites! Ugh! If I could do it all day I would lol! I may start a series doing just that. It’s amazing to see other’s creativity.
Anyway, without further adieu I’d like to introduce you to Naomi of Radioactive Ruby, Taylor of SewSinCity and Jamila of C-Eclectic Style. Check out their blogs and see what their up to and don’t forget to keep reading to find out what I’ve done to increase my own traffic.
Blog: Radioactive Ruby
Why I love the blog: First and foremost, Naomi has beautiful photography. The layout of her blog compliments her photos well and she has a great collection of different projects and interests. Most creatives I know have multiple interests and Naomi has blended all her interests seamlessly into her blog.
Naomi’s Blogging Tip: Personally I think a great tip would be to always keep posting and making. And to not stereotype yourself into one niche and just post what you want. It’s your blog to begin with!
Blog: SewSinCity – DIY sewing blog
Why I love the blog: Taylor was one of my first followers! Thanks Taylor! But I love her blog because she has really great projects. The garments she sews are sooo cute. If you want to see some cool, sexy outfits go to her page.
Blog: C-Eclectic Style – fashion and style blog
Why I love the blog: The layout of this blog is SICK! I love the header with all the dope pictures of her outfits. Her blog is amazing because the second you land on her page you know exactly what her blog is about and you feel her style plus she has really great content.
Go visit their pages you won’t be disappointed!
Now for the tips and tricks I’ve used to gain traffic…
Getting followers and consistent traffic is difficult. Especially for new bloggers. My blog is still in its infancy compared to the mega blogs out there but here are a few things I’ve done to get some eyeballs on my content…
3 (really 4) things I’ve done to increase blog traffic
1.) Be curious/Pay attention.
So I really love to write and edit posts on my iPhone. So when I first started the blog the first thing I did was find out if WordPress has an app, which they do! As I was getting acclimated with the app I would look around and go through all the different pages and links. I noticed that on the reader portion of the app, where all the blogs you follow automatically come to your timeline, they gave suggested “tags” that you could follow. One of the tags was “crafts & fashion”. For those that don’t know what a tag is, it is like a keyword that is used for people to find your content through searches.
I chose to follow “crafts & fashion” but noticed that there were no posts. So I thought to myself hmmm……why are there no posts with this tag? What I realized was that no bloggers had used the tag “crafts & fashion” when publishing their posts (which makes sense as it’s such a random tag for bloggers to use lol). But because I had found it through the app I knew other people had probably found it as well so the first thing I did was go and add that tag to all of my posts and you know what happened…..instantly I started getting likes and followers as other bloggers were no doubt going through their WordPress app and going through the suggested tags to follow. But now instead of there not being any blogs with the tag “crafts & fashion”, my blog was the only one. It was an instant uptick in followers and likes. I’m still getting people commenting, liking and reblogging my earlier posts from them finding me through WordPress reader. Cool huh?
I did recently go back to check and the app is no longer suggesting “crafts & fashion” as a tag anymore but there are other tags that may apply to your content that you could use.
If I hadn’t been curious and gone through the app and all the included pages as well as realized that there was an opening for a new blogger like myself to get my blog out there I would still be struggling to get views and likes. Always pay attention to the small details and ways to use what has already been laid out for you. Seize opportunities when they present themselves. And above all be curious!
2.) Find your niche and put yourself out there.
Because my main niche is sewing and DIY fashion. I often times go to burdastyle.com to get patterns and take online classes and such. BurdaStyle is exactly in my niche as they provide an online comunity of sewing enthusiasts. While on the site, since I’m overly curious I do a lot clicking on pages and links that have nothing to do with patterns and classes lol. What I found was that burdastyle has a forum where members share projects. In addition to sharing projects, in the description of their project many people include their blog sites. Bingo!!! People on burdastyle.com are already looking for cool sewing projects. Why not have them view my projects on burdasyle.com and then invite them to my blog for other projects, great creative business advice and DIY inspiration?!
This has been one of the best things I’ve done to gain traffic. Every time I post a new project on BurdaStyle I get at least 200% increase in my average daily traffic on my blog for a few days after initially posting my project. You can check my project posts on Burdastyle here, here and here.
Think about places that you visit often that may have an online community for others in your niche. Can you post some of your content there in a way that wont be spammy or annoying??
3.) Involve your friends and family.
Taylor from SewSinCity mentioned in her comment to me that she does not have any social media accounts. First, that’s amazing and second, social media isn’t all it’s cracked up to be lol! But I personally get the most mileage out of posting on social media when my friends and family post my articles for me. More people look at my blog when my sister posts on Facebook then when I post on my own facebook page. In fact, the day that I received the most views to my site thus far has been the day my sister and good friend posted an article to their facebook and twitter pages.
Involve other people. Have them vouch and support what you’re doing and trust me other people will take notice.
Last but not least, do not forget to use good tags. You know the “tags” field you see on the right when you’re writing your post…don’t skim over that. Think critically about what your article is about. I’ve received quite a bit of traffic from search engines of people looking for search terms very close to the tags I used for that particular post. You don’t want to use too many tags but definitely have a few really good ones that directly relate to your content.
Whew!! Long post! But hopefully filled with information that is useful to you. I am definitely not an expert and I’m learning just like you are. If you have any other tips please tell me and everyone reading.
As a new blogger what are some other things you’ve done to increase traffic to your site??
