In October I wrote a post about how I easily created a leather clutch from remnant fabric I found at Mood Fabrics NYC. Well after I made that clutch I realized what I really needed was a small leather card holder.
With the many times a week that I change my purse, my big full sized wallet is just getting in the way. To solve the problem I decided to take out the cards that I needed and just pop them into the inner pocket of whatever purse or clutch I was carrying….well I’m sure you know how that turned out! After many days of bumming lunch off my coworkers and scraping up coins to get a metro ticket because I’d left my bank card at home…in a purse…..on the top of my closet -_- I decided I better make something I could keep all my cards in and could throw in any bag big or small.
Everything I did was completely freehand. I know I know why wouldn’t create a prototype or sample first using scrap fabric, well if you’ve read my post on why I’m currently broke then you’ll understand! Trust me, I’m working on it lol!
Materials I used:
Here’s what I did to create my card holder:
1.) I measured a rectangle slightly bigger than the typical card size (be sure to decide how much seam allowance you want)
2.) Trace the shape you’d like for the front of your wallet. Use a rotary cutter to cut out your two pieces
3.) Use Super Glue to glue your two pieces together only around the edges. Use the glue sparingly. You are only trying to glue it together to create a foundation as you hand stitch. I used Gorilla glue which I was told is the strongest super glue around. I purchased it from the hardware store for under $5.
4.) Mark even holes on your wallet where you plan to stitch your pieces together
5.) Use the leather hole punch to puncture through all layers
6.) Using the double needle method, I hand stitched starting from the center and working outward on each side
7.) Once I had the card holder sewn together, I rounded the corners and used a lighter to lightly go over the edges and remove extra bits of fabric from cutting
Both the leather clutch and card holder were incredibly easy to make. It takes less than an hour. I even have a video of me making the card holder. Buttttt it takes so long to edit and perfect the video so comment and like the post and once I get enough interest I will post the video to Youtube for you guys!
