Hey guys! So this look with the matching knit crop top and pencil skirt is everywhere. It’s like Kim Kardashian’s go to outfit and I love it!! So I decided to craft my own and this post goes through exactly how I did it!
As you know I love Mimi G! She has great, easy to understand sewing tutorials and really great ideas. So to create this look I started by using one of her awesome tutorials and of course made it my own 😉
I used Mimi G’s Off The Shoulder Maxi Tutorial and altered the steps just slightly. Even though the tutorial is a paid tutorial the tips and tricks she gives you regarding construction is so worth it!
Overall I followed her instructions except for these changes:
1.) Slashed the pattern at my natural waist and added 3/8″ seam allowance to the top
2.) I wanted a really thick waistband so I added about 1-2″ to the top of the slashed skirt pattern piece so that when I folded the waist band over it totalled 2.5″
3.) To create the pencil silhouette I drew a straight line from right above my knee to the bottom of the skirt
4.) The slit – this is actually a funny story…..the original skirt I drafted wasn’t supposed to have a slit butttttt creating a full length pencil skirt looks amazing in your head but is horrible to walk in, trust me!! I should’ve known it wouldn’t work!Soooo to make it so that I could actually move/walk in my outfit I slashed one of the side seams of the skirt and created a thigh high slit. I did mine after I had constructed the entire skirt using this tutorial but use me as a learning and put the slit in beforehand!
And that’s it! I have yet to see a floor length pencil skirt and crop top combo and I love it, it’s so Unique (and sexy!!!!!). The knit fabric is amazing and so soft! Perfect for summer but to be honest I’ve been wearing it around the house this fall too
