I have always loved sewing and while on my DIY journey, sewing is the one thing I hope to get better at. Not only do I want to improve my sewing but also begin designing and making custom patterns for myself and others.
More on how I created my little black dress after the jump…
About this dress – I originally wanted a turtle neck long sleeve midi length dress for winter because they are perfect to throw on when you don’t feel like thinking about what to wear PLUS a black dress would be the perfect canvas to show off any custom jewelry pieces I’ve created.
Sooooo since l didn’t already have a pattern and I liked the way the garment fit, I decided to use Mimi G’s crop top turtle neck pattern (Love her!) and alter it to my liking. Originally I wanted to use the turtle neck collar but at the last minute decided on just an extremely high neck line.
Here are the changes I made to the pattern:
Took out the front and back seam
Extended the length of the pattern using my waist, hip, right above my knee, knee, and waist to knee measurements
Took out an inch gradually from the elbow to the wrist
Took out the turtle neck
Added a slash zipper to the back of the dress
I love the end result. It’s so versatile and the knit fabric I chose is the perfect material. I see myself making this dress again and again! Especially since now I have a pattern to use! Below are different looks I’ve created using the same dress. I’ve worn it to a black tie event, to go shopping and to work! Let me know what you think!
